One look at Janice Hardy’s twitter feed and you’ll quickly realize her commitment to books … and I don’t mean just to writing them.  Granted, she’s written three awesome books of her own in the Healing Wars trilogy, but Janice has also made herself a valuable resource for other writers.  Her blog site, The Other Side of the Story, is an online library of writing, publishing, and marketing tools, in addition to being a platform where she supports other authors like herself. Everybody Loves to Jump

Last night we had the privilege of hosting one of our younger son’s friends over night on this leg of his travels around the world.  After graduation, this young man took his father’s advice to get the “eff” out of here and do some traveling before settling down into his career, his day-to-day, his grown-up-and-not-a-college-student-anymore routine.  Taking his father’s advice to heart, he booked some tickets for his around the world journey—his destinations all centered around “jump sites” as his passion is sky diving. He had his first jump after making a New Year’s resolution with an older brother that they would jump together … a bucket list kind of thing.  That was was 5 years ago and he, unlike his brother who said once was enough, has been jumping ever since. I’m not a green thumb … not by any means.  In spite of that, I do care for a couple of house plants who are presently living and thriving in our home, almost in defiance of my historic inadequacies.  We won’t even talk about outdoor plants, so filled with creepy crawly things that unless they water, prune, and fertilize themselves stand little to no chance of survival in my backyard or on my balcony.  And yet, I love plants. They liven an environment and contribute elements of vitality in rooms otherwise filled with inanimate and purely functional things. Oklahoma and Other Storms

I admit, these moments are hard for me.  By “these moments” I mean the ones when natural disasters ruin the lives that people, like you and me, have spent years building, nurturing, growing, loving. Although we’ve advanced enough to explain them, even predict them, we’re still at a loss and dumbstruck when we are victimized by them. No matter their nature—hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes—we most frequently describe these moments of unsolicited and indiscriminate violence as “acts of God.” Maybe we do this in an attempt to make sense of them somehow … like we don’t understand how or why this would happen, but maybe he does.
