It is 4:46 AM as I begin this post. I haven’t blogged in a while. I haven’t had the time. Time. The lack of time has been my chief complaint of late. More than ever, what I want more of in my life is time … time that I can spend as I choose, to do with what I want. Here lately, what I want most is to write the second book brewing inside of me, but there doesn’t ever seem to be enough time. Of course, we both know that’s not true. Right? Beyond the Boundaries

I was walking downtown the other day and came across this: By “came across” I mean nearly tripped over. There, in the middle of the sidewalk, protruded the robust roots of a very tall, very confident tree. Its age was betrayed by the cement buckling on top of it. Clearly, when this tree was first planted, it must have been more agreeable with its surroundings. I imagine that at one point in its life it behaved and lived peacefully within the 4×6 plot of land it had been given. But then, it just kept growing—spreading wider, reaching higher, living freer—until its boundaries became more of a suggestion than a rule. Its pursuits undoubtedly spurred on by Seattle’s abundant rain and occasional sunshine. I’m feeling a little bit like that tree these days. I’m growing...

Fact: Baby seagulls are gray. They are loud, fluffy and, at times, so big and near adult-size that the only thing differentiating them from adults is their color, gray. Sunday morning, at the beginning of a walk talk with my love, we came across two huge ones milling about on the rocks jutting out of the ocean. “Look,” I say, “those are baby seagulls!” “Are you sure?” Marc asks. “They don’t look ‘baby’ to me. I can’t imagine them any bigger.” “Yeah . . . I think so.” Suddenly, looking at their size and not their color, I second guess myself. Maybe I’m wrong about that. “I guess they are pretty big, though.” We continued down the waterfront trail, doing what we always do during our times together, walking and soaking in the sun....
